Cartoon of the Week: The Avatar

Avatar: the Last Airbender is an Emmy award winning Nickelodeon television show, created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. It is set in four nations, earth, water, fire, and air. The four nations existed in peace until the Fire Nation attacked and upset the balance. "Only the Avatar, master of all four elements could stop them, but when the world needed him most he vanished." 100 years later, two water tribe siblings Sokka and Katara discover the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. The show is based on Aang's journey over the course of one year attempting to master all the elements and bring peace back to the world.

While the television show was designed for a younger audience, the show has captured the interest of viewers from all ages. It is far from your typical child's cartoon. In a period of thirty minutes the show explores everything from themes of love and honor to betrayal, violence, and war. This classic coming of age tale combines the Asian artistic influence with a riveting plot for the ultimate cartoon experience. If you haven't seen it yet, its is one cartoon you won't want to miss.
